Location
The InterContinental Shanghai Ruijin is located on Ruijin Er Road in the French Concession, one of Shanghai’s most charming and walkable neighborhoods. The hotel is equidistant from Xintiandi’s dining and shopping scene and the boutique-lined streets of Tianzifang, both about a 15-20 minute walk. Nanjing Road is a short taxi ride north. Pudong International Airport (PVG) is approximately 50 minutes by car.
The Property
The InterContinental Shanghai Ruijin is unlike any hotel in Shanghai. The property occupies the former state guest house — a sprawling compound of colonial-era villas set within 55,000 square meters of enclosed, manicured gardens. Walking through the iron gates, you leave the chaos of Shanghai behind and enter a world of tree-lined paths, century-old buildings, and manicured lawns. The main villa has hosted heads of state and dignitaries throughout China’s modern history. The property includes two restaurants, a spa, and an outdoor pool — all set within the gardens.
Check-In
Check-in takes place in one of the historic villas. The experience is elegant and unhurried — tea is offered as you settle in. IHG Diamond Elite members receive recognition and upgrades when available.
Garden View Room
The Garden View Room is housed in one of the property’s restored buildings. The rooms are spacious and classically appointed, blending colonial-era architecture with modern luxury amenities. High ceilings, parquet floors, and large windows overlooking the private gardens create an atmosphere of refined tranquility. The king bed is comfortable with quality linens, and the room includes a work desk, flat-screen TV, minibar, and a Nespresso machine.
Bathroom
The bathroom is generously sized with marble finishes, a deep soaking tub, separate walk-in shower, and quality amenities. The tub is particularly inviting after a day of exploring Shanghai’s bustling streets.
Restaurants & Bars
On-Site Restaurant (Breakfast)
Breakfast is served in one of the garden-facing dining rooms — a beautiful setting with natural light filtering through mature trees. The buffet features both Chinese and Western options, with excellent dim sum, congee, and fresh fruits alongside standard international fare.
Bottom Line
The InterContinental Shanghai Ruijin is one of the most unique hotel experiences in China. The private gardens feel impossible in a city of 26 million people — a hidden oasis of calm, history, and beauty. The rooms are spacious and classically elegant, the gardens are magical, and the French Concession location is perfect for exploring Shanghai’s most charming neighborhood on foot. For travelers who value character and history over glass-and-steel modernity, this is the hotel in Shanghai.
