Location
The Kimpton Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh occupies a beautifully restored historic building on William Penn Place in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh. The Cultural District theaters are steps away, PNC Park (Pirates) and PPG Paints Arena (Penguins) are within walking distance, and the Strip District’s food scene is a 15-minute walk east. Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is approximately 30 minutes by car.
The Property
The Kimpton Monaco Pittsburgh occupies a restored 1903 neoclassical building that perfectly suits the brand’s playful-meets-elegant aesthetic. The lobby features bold colors, eclectic art, and the signature Kimpton living room feel. The daily complimentary wine hour brings guests together in the lobby. There is a fitness centre and 11,300 square feet of meeting space; there is no pool and no spa. Valet parking runs $50 a day. The hotel has genuine personality — something Pittsburgh’s downtown hotel scene has historically lacked.
Check-In
Check-in is friendly and personalized with Kimpton’s boutique-hotel warmth. IHG Diamond members receive recognition and upgrades when available. The staff is enthusiastic about Pittsburgh and loaded with local recommendations.
Deluxe King
The Deluxe King room features Kimpton’s signature bold design — vibrant colors, modern art, and playful touches that give each room personality. The king bed is comfortable with quality linens, and the room includes a flat-screen TV, yoga mat, minibar, and Atelier Bloem amenities. The high ceilings of the original building give the rooms a sense of grandeur — this is the James H. Reed Building, a Beaux Arts office block from 1903 that reopened as a hotel on 20 January 2015 with 248 rooms including 13 suites over nine floors.
Bathroom
The bathroom is modern with a walk-in shower, single vanity, and quality bath products. Compact but well-designed, consistent with the Kimpton brand standard.
Restaurants & Bars
The Commoner (Breakfast & Dinner)
The hotel’s ground-floor restaurant serves British-inspired gastropub fare with a Pittsburgh twist. Breakfast features both lighter options and heartier dishes. Dinner offers craft cocktails and elevated comfort food in a lively atmosphere.
Amenities
The Commoner is a genuine restaurant rather than a hotel outlet obligation: 120 seats, wood-fired cooking, local ales and spirits, opened under executive chef Dennis Marron. The Biergarten handles outdoor drinking in season. Kimpton’s nightly social hour is the brand ritual and it works here. Event space totals 11,300 square feet, anchored by the Sheffield and Sofia Ballrooms with floor-to-ceiling windows facing Sixth Avenue, plus smaller rooms named for Pittsburgh figures — Clemente, Salk, Carson, Fahlman. No pool, no spa. Valet parking is $50 per day.
Getting There
The hotel sits at Sixth Avenue and William Penn Place, directly across from Mellon Square Park, which puts most of downtown inside a ten-minute walk. PPG Paints Arena and Market Square are both 0.4 miles, PNC Park 0.9 miles and Acrisure Stadium 1.1 miles — a rare hotel from which you can walk to Penguins, Pirates and Steelers games. Pittsburgh International is roughly 18 miles west, about 30 minutes outside rush hour.
Bottom Line
The Kimpton Monaco is the most characterful hotel in downtown Pittsburgh. The restored building is beautiful, the rooms have personality, and the daily wine hour creates a genuine sense of community. It is the hotel that makes you excited about exploring Pittsburgh — a city that deserves far more attention from travelers than it receives.

Cash rates average $150-$280/night. IHG redemptions run 30,000-50,000 points/night. At $200 average, a 40,000-point redemption yields ~0.50cpp — right at IHG’s threshold. During major Pittsburgh events (Steelers games, holidays), cash rates rise and points value improves. Book Kimpton Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh through Scott & Thomas
