Location
voco Times Square South occupies a mid-rise building on West 36th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues, in Manhattan’s Garment District. The location is practical rather than glamorous — Penn Station and Madison Square Garden are two blocks south, Times Square is a ten-minute walk north, and the subway access (A/C/E at 34th Street–Penn Station) connects you to anywhere in the city. The surrounding blocks offer a mix of Korean restaurants, delis, and the everyday bustle of Midtown West.
The Property
voco is IHG’s “premium” soft brand, and this Times Square South location delivers a modest interpretation of that positioning. The lobby is compact but stylish, with a small lounge area. Finches Den, the ground-floor restaurant and bar, anchors the public spaces and features a seasonal outdoor patio — a rare amenity in Midtown. A small fitness center is available. The property is clean and well-maintained, though don’t expect grand public spaces — this is New York, where every square foot counts.
Check-In
Check-in was efficient despite a line at arrival. IHG One Rewards status was recognized. The front desk staff were helpful with directions and restaurant recommendations. The lobby can feel crowded during peak check-in times given its compact size.
Standard King
The Standard King room is compact — typical for Manhattan — but thoughtfully designed to maximize the space. The king bed is comfortable with quality linens and a good mattress. A small desk, smart TV, Keurig coffee maker, and USB charging points throughout keep things functional. The decor is contemporary with warm tones and clean lines. Soundproofing was adequate for Manhattan, though light sleepers may want to request a higher floor away from 36th Street.
Bathroom
The bathroom is small but modern with a walk-in shower (no tub), single vanity, and quality bath amenities. Good water pressure and a rain showerhead elevate the experience. Storage is minimal — pack light on toiletries.
Restaurants & Bars
Finches Den
The hotel’s restaurant serves cocktails and locally inspired dishes in a comfortable setting. The seasonal outdoor patio is the real draw — sidewalk dining in Midtown with surprisingly good drinks and small plates. It’s not a destination restaurant, but it’s a convenient and pleasant option, especially for a nightcap after a Broadway show.
Bottom Line
voco Times Square South won’t wow you with its rooms or amenities, but it delivers solid value in one of the world’s most expensive hotel markets. The location near Penn Station is practical, the rooms are clean and modern if compact, and the IHG points earning makes it attractive for loyalty program members. For a Manhattan stay on points, this is one of the more accessible IHG options.
Value
| Cash rate | $180–450 / night |
|---|---|
| Award cost | 40,000–70,000 |
| Implied cpp | 0.60¢ |
Cash rates range wildly from $180–$450/night depending on season and events. As an IHG property, free nights through IHG One Rewards vary with dynamic pricing (typically 40,000–70,000 points). At $300/night and 50,000 points, that’s 0.6 cents per point — above the 0.5cpp IHG threshold. During peak periods (New Year’s, marathon weekend, Fashion Week), cash rates soar and points redemptions become exceptional value. Off-peak, cash rates can drop low enough to make paying preferable.
